Gusto Payroll to Xero: Automated Journal Entry Guide

Gusto doesn't have a native journal entry integration with Xero. The Gusto–Xero connection syncs payroll as invoices and bills — not as a proper journal entry. Bookkeepers who use Xero for clients on Gusto payroll still need to create the journal entry manually.

How PostBooks connects Gusto to Xero

  1. Export your Gusto payroll report. Download the payroll summary CSV from Gusto > Reports > Payroll.
  2. Upload to PostBooks and map to Xero accounts. PostBooks maps Gusto line items to your Xero chart of accounts. Common mappings: Gross Wages → Wages Expense, Net Pay → Wages Payable.
  3. Export or sync to Xero. PostBooks generates a Xero-compatible manual journal or syncs directly via the Xero API.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gusto's Xero integration syncs payroll as invoices and bills, not as a manual journal entry. PostBooks generates a proper manual journal from your Gusto payroll summary.
In Xero, you can create a manual journal under Accounting > Manual Journals. PostBooks automates this: upload your Gusto CSV and PostBooks generates the balanced Xero manual journal ready to import or post via API.

Stop entering Gusto payroll manually
